Political Impact of Blockchain Technology

As blockchain provides a way for decentralized and transparent governance, the predicted effect of blockchain is to create a more transparent society. In governments that are embracing the use of blockchain in services like land title transfers or administrative procedures, the result is expected to be a higher level of civil participation, increase in the percentage of citizens participating in the political process by voting, expressing an opinion and supporting initiatives. This could create a version of the government structure and culture, Government 2.0, that could use smart contracts to follow up on campaign promises and practice responsive and transparent leadership. When certain functions of the government become decentralized, creating a so-called government as a service, the elected government can focus on applying technology and data to improving society’s quality of life and granting everyone pursuit of happiness. In the light of a new kind of globalization happening – a globalization of citizenship and occupation – a tax and legal structure is required to support the new kind of global living and employment.
