There is a new type of scam associated with customer service representative impersonators on social media accounts who chat with customers and take payment or other sensitive details or get them to transfer payment. In the cryptocurrency investment arena this is even more common. Here’s an example of an impersonator of a specific customer service representative on Telegram for a well-known ICO marketing service; impersonator Telegram username is very similar to the actual rep and they used the same profile picture. These scamming attempts hurts the legitimate businesses’ credibility and tarnishes their reputation. Once such attacks are knows, it’s best for the business to announce the scamming attempt and provide a screenshot. Incidentally, impersonation attacks are a signal that the business is popular and its service is in demand and that’s another reason to share this information on social media.
